Using VereTel tracking numbers with TikTok ads

TikTok has a call ad format and it also sends people to web pages. In both cases a VereTel number tells you whether the phone rang, but not which video or creative caused it. This page is upfront about that gap.

At a glance

  • Two routes to a call TikTok’s Call Ads, or a video ad that sends people to a page on your website, where they call the number they find there.
  • Which video caused it? VereTel attributes calls by the number dialed, so it can tell which video caused a call only if each video or ad group has its own number.
  • Treat the count as a floor Some people will call your main number a day later. Those calls do not appear against the campaign. Treat the desk’s count as a floor, not a total.

Two ways TikTok can lead to a phone call

TikTok’s help pages describe a format called Call Ads. As read on September 29, 2026:

  • You choose the Lead generation objective, then Phone call as the optimization location.
  • The button text defaults to “Call now”, and the destination is either a phone number or a TikTok Instant Page.
  • The only optimization goal currently supported is Click.
  • TikTok states that advertisers targeting US users must use US-based phone numbers.

The other route is the usual one: a video ad sends people to a page on your website, and they call the number they find there. Which one you use depends on where your audience is most likely to act.

A note on the US-number rule

The numbers in VereTel’s plans are local US numbers, in an area code you choose, so they are US-based numbers. TikTok’s rules can change, so rather than guess, enter the number in Ads Manager and see whether it is approved. If it is not, use the landing-page route instead, where TikTok’s rule does not apply at all.

Set-up that keeps the comparison clean

  1. Give each TikTok campaign its own number, labeled in the words you use in Ads Manager, for example “TikTok · Medicare · short video”.
  2. For website traffic, build one landing page per campaign, or use number insertion to show a different registered number on each page.
  3. Keep TikTok traffic off pages that other channels use. A shared page means a shared number, and the calls blur together.
  4. Write down the date each campaign starts and stops so you can filter the desk to exactly that period.

What the desk can and cannot tell you

For each call, the desk shows when it started, the caller’s number, the tracking number and its label, whether it was answered or missed, and how long it lasted. Filter by date range and by answered or missed. That answers the practical questions: did this campaign make the phone ring, and did anyone pick up?

It cannot answer these:

  • Which video, creative or audience inside the campaign caused the call, unless you gave each its own number.
  • Whether the caller clicked an ad first. VereTel logs the number that was dialed.
  • Whether the call became a policy. The desk has no lead statuses or notes today.

Creative testing without losing the thread

Social video encourages many variations: different hooks, different lengths, different faces. You do not need a number for every clip. A workable pattern is one number per campaign for the always-on ads, plus a temporary number for a specific test you want to judge on its own, such as a new offer or a new audience.

When the test ends, retire the temporary number or fold it back into the campaign, and record the result with its dates. The number allowance on your plan is the practical limit, so spend it on comparisons that would change a decision. If two variations would lead you to the same choice either way, they can share a number.

A reasonable expectation for social video

Short video works differently from search. People rarely act on the first view, so some will see a TikTok ad and call your main number a day later. Those calls do not appear against the campaign. Treat the desk’s count as a floor, not a total.

If you want a cleaner read, run the campaign long enough to compare weeks, keep the number and the landing page stable, and compare the desk’s calls with the clicks TikTok reports. See measuring cost per call for the arithmetic. VereTel does not send calls back to TikTok as conversions.

Common questions

Does TikTok have a call ad format?

Yes. TikTok’s help describes Call Ads, set up under the Lead generation objective with Phone call as the optimization location. The call to action defaults to Call now.

Will TikTok accept a VereTel number?

TikTok says advertisers targeting US users must use US-based phone numbers, and the numbers in VereTel’s plans are local US numbers. Rules change, so try the number in Ads Manager. If it is not accepted, send people to a landing page that shows the number.

Can VereTel tell which TikTok video caused a call?

Only if each video or ad group has its own number. VereTel attributes calls by the number dialed, not by the click or the creative.
