Where a Facebook or Instagram caller gets your number
Three routes are common for insurance agencies.
- A call ad. The ad carries a Call now button. When someone taps it, their phone opens the dialer with your number filled in.
- A landing page. The ad drives traffic to a page on your site, and the caller dials the number there.
- A lead ad that offers a call. The person fills a short form, then is offered a way to phone you.
The first and third put a number inside Meta’s own ad. The second puts it on your page, which is the easiest place to use number insertion.
What Meta’s help says about call ads
From Meta’s Business Help Center, as read on September 29, 2026:
- Call ads can be created in Ads Manager under the leads, sales and traffic objectives. With traffic, you choose Phone call as the destination.
- You enter a country code and the full business phone number. Meta says call ads can run with any number the business provides, including toll-free numbers.
- Once approved, the ad shows a Call now button. Tapping it opens the phone’s dialer with your number filled in; the person can still back out before calling.
- Meta reports metrics such as estimated call confirmation clicks and calls placed.
A VereTel tracking number fits that field like any other number. Meta’s options and wording change, so confirm them in Ads Manager when you build the campaign.
One number per campaign or audience
Meta’s own reporting counts taps on the call button and calls placed from the ad. It cannot tell you what happened once the call reached your office. A VereTel number gives you that half: whether it was answered or missed, and how long it lasted.
Decide what you want to compare, then assign numbers to match:
- Two audiences, such as adults 26 to 45 and adults 50 to 64: one number each, in separate ad sets.
- Two offers, such as an ACA plan check and a Medicare review: one number each, in separate campaigns.
- Facebook versus Instagram in the same campaign: only if you build separate ads, since a number belongs to an ad, not a placement.
Label each number in the same words as the ad set, for example “Meta · ACA · 26-45”. Your desk shows that label beside every call.
Reading the two counts together
Expect the numbers not to match. Some people tap Call now and hang up before it connects. Some call from a saved number later. Some see a landing page number and never touch an ad button. Meta’s count measures button taps and calls placed from the ad; the desk counts calls that actually reach a tracking number, including missed ones.

A practical routine: at the end of each week, filter the desk to the ad campaign’s date range, count calls per label, and note how many were missed. Set that beside the spend and results in Ads Manager. Look at trends across weeks rather than trying to reconcile every single call.
Honest limits
- VereTel does not send calls back to Meta as conversions, and it does not connect to Meta’s pixel or conversion tools.
- Attribution is by number. If two ad sets share a number, their calls are counted together.
- VereTel cannot tell whether a caller clicked an ad. It knows which number they dialed. A person who saw a Facebook ad and then called your main line will not appear against the campaign.
- Call recording and transcription are coming, not live. Today the desk shows who called, when, and for how long, not what was said.
Common questions
Can I use a VereTel number in a Meta call ad?
Meta’s help says call ads can run with any phone number the business provides, including toll-free numbers. A tracking number in a VereTel plan is a local number in an area code you choose, so it fits that field.
Why does Ads Manager show different call numbers than my desk?
Meta counts taps on the call button and calls placed from the ad. The desk logs calls that reach your tracking number, answered or missed. The two count different events, so they will not match exactly.
Does VereTel send call results back to Meta?
No. VereTel does not send conversions to Meta or any other ad platform. You compare results by reading your desk next to Ads Manager.
