Dynamic number insertion for your website

People who find you through your website should call a number that tells you so. VereTel’s small script replaces the phone number on the sites and pages you register with the tracking number for that site or page, so website calls are counted apart from your other sources.

  1. Your page as published(727) 555-0100, your usual number
  2. VereTel snippetwhich number for this page?
  3. What the visitor sees(727) 555-0121, the tracking number for this site or page
Only the numbers you register are swapped. If the snippet cannot load, visitors still see your usual number.

At a glance

  • One script tag

    Add one tag to your site’s template, and it shows the tracking number for each site or page you register.

  • Per site and per page

    Every visitor to a page sees the same number. Numbers are not handed out per visitor or per keyword.

  • Your usual number as a fallback

    If the script is blocked or a page is not registered, the page keeps the number it was published with.

How the snippet works

You add one script tag to your site. When a page loads, the script:

  1. asks VereTel which tracking number belongs on this page, sending the page’s address;
  2. receives a short list of swaps: your usual number, and the tracking number to show instead;
  3. replaces only those numbers, both in the text visitors read and in tap-to-call links.

If anything goes wrong, whether the script is blocked, the network is slow or a page is not registered, the page simply keeps the number it was published with. Visitors always see a working number.

Per site and per page, not per visitor

VereTel’s number insertion assigns numbers by site and by page. Every visitor to a given page sees the same tracking number. It does not hand each visitor a number of their own, and it does not follow a visitor from page to page.

That design is simple and predictable, and it shapes how you plan your pages:

  • give each campaign its own landing page, and each landing page its own number, when you want campaigns compared;
  • register your main site with one number to measure calls from people who found you directly or through search;
  • if you run more than one site, each site can have its own number.

What the snippet sends

To choose a number, the script sends the address of the page being viewed and the site the visitor came from (the domain only, not the full address). It also passes the campaign source tag if the link carried one, and whether the visit came from an ad click, as a yes or no rather than the click identifier itself. It sends no names, form entries or contact details.

Setting it up

Once you have numbers, you register your sites and the pages that should show a tracking number, and choose the number each one shows. You or your web person paste one tag into the site’s template. A free account includes a test tag to try first: only your own test link switches it on, and real visitors send nothing. The DNI product page walks through the planning step, and number insertion is included in every plan. Numbers are not on sale yet. Create a free account and ask to be told when they are.

Common questions

Which websites does it work with?

Any site where you can add a script tag to the page template, including WordPress and most website builders.

What happens if the script does not load?

The page shows the number it was published with. Nothing breaks, and calls to that number still reach you as they do today.

Can it show a different number for each keyword?

No. VereTel assigns numbers by site and by page. To compare campaigns, send each campaign to its own landing page with its own number.
